THE NEXT morning Jake was tidying up the house and picked up Damien’s leather jacket. He put it up to his face and breathed in deeply, closing his eyes. He stood there enjoying the rich smell of leather mixed with the smell of Damien himself.
He opened his eyes to see Damien standing in the doorway, watching him intently. “You like that? The smell of leather?”
“Mm. And of you.”
“You’ll love this, then,” said Damien and walked over to the duffel bag, which Jake had put on the coffee table. He opened it up and pulled out a black leather jacket, then handed it to Jake.
Jake looked at both jackets in his hands. “You got a new one? This one doesn’t look that old.”
“The new one’s for you. Thought you might like to come riding with me sometime.”
“Damien, you shouldn’t have! I mean, thank you!”
Jake handed Damien’s jacket back to him and lifted the other one, and Damien chuckled. “Straight to the nose. You do like the smell of leather, don’t you?”
“I do, actually. It’s kind of addictive.”
Damien tilted his head and looked narrowly at Jake.
Jake tried the jacket on over his pajamas. “It fits perfectly, thanks! Now I want to go try it out.”
“We could go for a ride this morning if you like. I’m used to pillioning Diane. Although, I’d say you’d be a lot heavier than her—a good thirty pounds or so.”
“A bean is heavier than Diane,” said Jake.
“Shall we, then? Go for a ride? And where?”
“We could go to Girraween National Park. There’s a pretty neat walk or two out there, and the rangers will mind our jackets and helmets for us. We’d be back in plenty of time for lunch with Judy.”
“Done. Let’s get breakfast and head out, then.”
They ate quickly, and Damien went out to start the bike. Jake followed him and put his jacket on. Damien turned around to look at Jake carrying two towels and two pairs of board shorts.
“There are quite a few swimming holes out there. These are string-ties, so they should fit you.”
“Great!”
Damien took the towels and shorts from Jake and put them in the pannier of the bike. Then he swung a leg over the huge machine, which was throbbing loudly. He showed Jake how to place his feet and said, “Those leather chap things about your ankles, where did you get those?”
“Those and the boots are my riding gear. Thought it might be wise to stop me burning myself on the bike.”
“Good idea.”
Jake sat on the back of the bike. “The seat’s a lot softer than a saddle!” he said.
Damien held up a hand, then turned and fiddled with Jake’s helmet. “There,” his voice sounded suddenly inside Jake’s helmet.
Jake was startled. “Hey, what’s this? Can you hear me?”
“Helmet radios. Stops you having to yell and me having to lean over all the time to hear you.”
“Cool!”
“What did you say about the seat?”
“I said it’s a lot softer than a saddle.”
A soft chuckle sounded inside Jake’s helmet. “I can imagine. Now hold on tight.
